“Deep beneath the earth, my eyes have grown accustomed to the gloom. Near blind, my feet navigate over cool stone and wet moss. I speak, and a familiar voice speaks back, echoing convenient half truths. Reassured, secure in my thoughts. Until a flicker of light catches my eye. I begin to climb forward, the voice tells me to stop. Pressing on, my legs ache as the voice cries louder. Exasperated, I reach the surface. The brilliance burns my skin, the voice now gone, it can’t assure me. On hands and knees, I crawl back to what I know. The comfort of the cave.”
